ERA Legal has an experienced team of lawyers, paralegals and support staff. Our lawyers come from a variety of backgrounds, including large national firms and smaller boutique corporate firms, and have the skills and experience necessary to act in the most complex of matters.

  • Partners

    Daren Anderson

    Daren has been admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia since 1993 and is entitled to practice in all States and Territories of Australia.

    Daren is the founding and managing partner of ERA Legal. Prior to establishing ERA Legal, Daren was the managing partner of Carbone Anderson, Property and Litigation Lawyers.

    Daren specialises in commercial and insolvency matters. He has extensive experience in a wide range of commercial transactions and acts for a number of companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

    He has assisted scores of companies to restructure and turn around their financial affairs and corporate practices. Daren is recognised as a innovative insolvency lawyer and his advice is regularly sought by insolvency practitioners, accountants and other lawyers.

    He has appeared as an advocate in all NSW courts, including the Supreme, District and Local Courts, as well as the Federal and Family Courts of Australia. Daren has also argued a number of cases in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, the Anti-Discrimination Tribunal, the Commercial Claims Tribunal and the Industrial Relations Commission of NSW.

    In 2001, 2002 and 2004 he was a member of the Criminal Law Committee of the Law Society of NSW.

    Simon Gallant

    Simon began practising in 1985 and has wide experience of corporate and insolvency law in both the UK and New South Wales.

    Simon primarily practises in corporate insolvency and reconstruction and acts for a number of liquidators and administrators. In addition, he provides advice to directors in a range of matters that arise in day-to-day business.

    Thomas Russell

    Thomas Russell was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia in 2003 and previously worked at a boutique insolvency law practice before joining ERA Legal in 2005.

    Thomas is member of the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Australia and the Turnaround Management Association and primarily practices in the area of insolvency and corporate turnaround.

    Thomas regularly advises and represents insolvency practitioners in respect of issues arising in insolvency administrations, including complex issues arising in connection with voluntary administration, receiverships and liquidations.

    Thomas also advises directors and creditors of companies in connection with insolvency issues and specialises in the defence of winding up applications.

    Thomas also practices in the areas of commercial litigation, building and construction law and criminal law. He frequently appears as an advocate in the Local, District and Supreme Courts of New South Wales and the Federal Court of Australia.

  • Associates

    Michael Bacina

    Michael was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia in 2005, and joined ERA Legal in 2011 after having gained experience in law firms in Sydney and Toronto, Canada and as in-house Construction Counsel for an ASX20 developer.

    Michael is a respected commercial litigator known for providing timely and accurate advice on liability and quantum in commercial and construction disputes, including claims under the Building and Construction Industry Security for Payment Act and the Home Building Act, disputes under the Strata Schemes Management Act and other commercial disputes, including matters involving insolvency.

    Michael has been involved in a number of notable successes in his field, including securing an urgent interlocutory injunction in The Owners SP64282 v Patelis [2011] NSWSC 222, securing interlocutory relief and orchestrating a successful settlement in Evergreen Tours Pty Ltd v McLaren [2010] NSWSC 1362 and successfully persuading the Court of Appeal in HIA Insurance v Kostas [2009] NSWCA 292 (later overturned on appeal to the High Court).

    Michael is an expert in commercial litigation and an editor of the Practitioner's Guide to Civil Litigation, 3rd Edition (2010). He regularly appears before the Supreme, District and Local Courts as well as the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal.

    Paul Taylor

    Paul joined ERA Legal in 2010 bringing with him a wealth of experience and knowledge.

    Paul was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia in 1999 and commenced practice in the private sector after a working as a police prosecutor in the New South Wales Local Courts in 2000.

    Paul worked for an extended period at large city law firm working in their litigation group focusing on administrative law, debt recovery, contractual claims and negligence claims. He acted on a number of large matters on behalf of the Treasury Managed Fund of New South Wales and the Roads and Traffic Authority. These matters involved claims for economic loss in the Supreme Court of New South Wales. He also prosecuted on behalf of the Roads and Traffic Authority in the Local, District and Supreme Court of New South Wales.

    In 2005 Paul obtained accreditation from the Law Society in the area of Advocacy.

    In 2006 Paul commenced working in a commercial litigation role focusing on banking and finance. He acted for a number of large financial institutions both prosecuting and defending claims in the Supreme and Federal Court. This included enforcing securities such as personal guarantees, mortgages and charges.

    In 2007 Paul joined a boutique firm where he headed up their commercial litigation practice. He acted for a number of large developers and commercial clients in all jurisdictions, in a wide range of matters from small debt recovery matters to contested winding up applications, disputed building and construction claims, retail lease disputes and insolvency matters acting for and against liquidators and administrators. During this time Paul managed all aspects of the litigation including drafting pleadings, affidavits and other complex documents. Paul also acted on commercial transactions, such as the sale of businesses, joint ventures and building contracts. He also acted for builders and subcontractors in respect of claims under the Building and Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 1999 (NSW).

    Paul has completed the Insolvency Practitioners Course through the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Australia.

  • Solicitors

    Angelina Kozary

    Angelina joined ERA Legal in June of 2007 as a paralegal. She completed the Diploma in Law program offered by the Legal Profession Admission Board and Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice through the College of Law and was admitted as a solicitor in the Supreme Court of NSW in October 2008.

    Angelina has been working in the profession for some eight years, gaining invaluable practical experience whilst embarking on her studies. Angelina came to ERA Legal from a nationally integrated mid-tier firm, where she was a member of their workers’ compensation practice group. Prior to this Angelina was a law clerk within the collection and enforcement division at a private lending mortgage firm where she was highly involved in the litigation of many mortgage-related disputes, including many high profile decisions. Angelina also has experience in personal injury and public liability matters, having been closely involved in the running of matters for both plaintiffs and defendants.

    Angelina has appeared in the Local, District and Supreme Courts of NSW along with the Federal Magistrates Court and is familiar with the practices of these Courts. She has worked closely with a vast array of clients including a number of large insurance companies, lending institutions, self-insured corporations, small businesses and private lenders.

  • Beau Weigand

    Beau joined the firm in 2008 and soon after was admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

    He completed a Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Laws Double Degree at the University of Wollongong in 2007 and obtained a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice in 2008.

    Prior to joining ERA Legal, Beau gained valuable experience working for a leading national law firm as a paralegal in the litigation practice group. Beau was exposed to major litigation matters for many high profile corporate clients and utilises this background in his work with ERA Legal.

    Stefano Calabretta

    Stefano joined the firm in November 2010 having completed a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws double degree at the University of Sydney in 2007.

    Prior to joining ERA Legal, Stefano worked as a Graduate at Law for a boutique Sydney firm specialising in Competition Law.

    Stefano subsequently worked as a Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court of New South Wales during which he was able to gain valuable superior court experience and utilises this background in his work with ERA Legal.

    Stefano has also worked as a clerk at a small CBD firm as well as in various non-legal capacities for a charitable organisation aimed at promoting the interests of the Italian community of New South Wales.

    Stefano was admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in April 2009.

    Sean Jenner

    Sean joined the firm as a solicitor in 2011. He specialises in insolvency and commercial litigation and is qualified to practice in NSW and the ACT.

    After graduating from university, Sean gained a wealth of real-world commercial experience as a consultant with a leading finance and consultancy firm, where he assisted company directors with insolvency and corporate funding matters across a broad range of industries in the SME market. This experience has direct application to his current role as a solicitor specialising in insolvency and commercial litigation and gives him an edge that other legal practitioners are unable to offer.

    Before he joined ERA Legal in 2011, Sean further enhanced his skill set with a role at a specialist Sydney insolvency and commercial law practice, where he worked for insolvency practitioners and company directors in connection with a broad range of insolvency and litigation matters.

    Jonathan Hidayat

    Jonathan joined the firm in 2011, having been admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2010.

    He completed a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Technology Sydney in 2010 and a Bachelor of Economics at the University of Sydney in 2006.

    Prior to joining ERA Legal, Jonathan gained legal experience working in a national law firm assisting the commercial litigation practice group. While there, he worked on a number of high profile cases involving large corporate clients and he brings this experience with him to ERA Legal.

    Jia Lee

    Jia joined the firm in 2011 as a solicitor. Jia completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Sydney in 2005 and a Bachelor of Laws at the University of New South Wales in 2008. In her spare time, she is finishing a Master of Laws at the University of Sydney.

    Prior to joining ERA Legal, Jia worked as a paralegal at a top-tier national law firm. She gained valuable experience in large-scale litigation, construction disputes and property development matters. Jia has also completed an internship at a government agency in the field of human rights and native title. She also currently volunteers at a community legal centre.

    Andrea Marrone has been with ERA Legal since 2005, and assists our solicitors with the day-to-day running of several files in the field of conveyancing, leasing, sale of business and finance.

    Stephen Connor heads our Business Development Division and is the first point of contact for many of ERA Legal's clients.

    With a background in media and IT, Stephen and his team field enquiries from dozens of prospective clients every day and ensure that each client's enquiry is directed to a solicitor with appropriate expertise in the relevant area.
